Why are we still doing EDI in 2026?

Even through the most modern advancements, the retail industry runs on EDI. Learn why this foundational technology continues to provide structure, security, and visibility as the industry rapidly evolves.

When I started working with Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) 25 years ago, people were already speculating that it would soon be replaced by more contemporary e-business solutions, such as XML (which, ultimately, didn’t happen). Decades later, EDI remains in use, but the focus of replacement discussions shifted to APIs. While APIs are increasingly utilized for modern retail avenues like marketplaces, EDI continues to be the dominant mechanism for exchanging business documents across the retail supply chain today.

Here at Crisp, we know firsthand that EDI isn’t just surviving; it’s thriving as the backbone of the retail supply chain.

So, why does a half-century-old system continue to dominate?

The resiliency of EDI lies in its deep integration and unwavering reliability across the retail sector. Major retailers have spent decades building their entire operational ecosystems around EDI. Their order and inventory management software, warehousing and logistics systems, and accounting applications are all configured to communicate through EDI standards and EDI is ingrained in all of these business processes. Ripping out and replacing this infrastructure wouldn’t just be costly; it would be a monumental, high-risk undertaking – not only for the retailer, but for all of their vendors as well! Why put a well oiled machine at risk? (Or as the old adage says “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”)

EDI was built for high-volume commerce

“Ingrained” doesn’t mean “outdated” in terms of effectiveness and reliability. EDI was purpose-built for the precise, high-volume, automated exchange of business documents. Once an EDI solution is properly implemented, it offers unparalleled efficiency, accuracy, and ease of use. It standardizes communication, drastically reduces manual errors, and accelerates transaction cycles – from purchase orders, to shipment notices, through to invoices. Since every major retailer already speaks this “language,” once a vendor has an EDI solution in place, they can “speak” to any retail customer they want to do business with. In essence, EDI is the silent, efficient workhorse of the retail world. It’s a proven solution that continues to provide immense value, enabling seamless, automated trade partnerships. In 2026, and for many years to come, EDI remains the indispensable standard for keeping the retail supply chain moving smoothly and reliably.
